Potato- in -Containers

Potatoes are the most cooked vegetables in almost every home. Also, the whole world is crazy about the chips made from it. So we all know that potato is the king of vegetables, which can be grown in any medium. Also it is very easy to take care of them. You can store your potatoes anywhere. If you have space constraints, you can also grow it in containers . Here we are sharing some easy tips for growing potatoes.

  1. Right Selection/Buy potato seeds

The most important thing for growing potatoes is its seed. It is also available in nursery stores or online, but buying from supermarkets is the best option as they are disease free and produce better quality spuds. Potatoes make a great side dish or other entree when cut and cooked properly. To start your potatoes you need seed potatoes or supermarket potatoes with no bruises or rot. After picking the potatoes, keep them in a dark cool environment for about 2-3 days until they develop eye buds. Small bumps on their surface skin indicate that it is ready for planting. When the eyes of the potatoes start appearing, plant them immediately. So Always use certified seeds to grow potatoes, so that diseases and viruses caused by potatoes can be prevented. Potatoes present at home sometimes also work as seeds.

2. Prepare the soil

After buying seeds, you should also choose the soil properly. To plant potato seeds, first add one to two mugs of manure to the soil and mix it well. After mixing the fertilizer, put the soil in the pot, scratch the soil well once and keep it in the sun for some time.

3. Pre germination

Scientists have found that keeping your potato seeds in a cool, dimly lit environment for the first few weeks of growth can make them much stronger. The researchers suggest planting these sprouts outside after 2-3 weeks as they will be well established by then, with strong roots ready to withstand transplanting into soil or containers. Scientists have discovered how important it is to keep potato seeds in an environmentally controlled location before transferring them outside.

3. Cut the Potatoes

If using large seed potatoes, you can cut them into smaller pieces, each with at least one healthy sprout. Remember to dry the cut pieces for a day or two before sowing. Use them only after this, this increases the percentage of good results.

4. Choose a container

Potatoes are a versatile food that does well in any climate. They do best when permanently planted outdoors or grown indoors in large containers with depth rather than width. An ideal container should be at least 24 inches deep, but if you want to plant 4 seed potatoes per bucket, make sure your buckets are 10 gallons each and use plastic containers such as trash cans, sacks, tires, etc. Allow. However they don't do so well during the summer months as their tops will turn green instead of purple-ish brown, resembling potatoes on the outside.

5. Plant the potatoes

Plant seed potatoes about six inches deep, and twelve inches apart, in rows that are about two to three feet apart. You can also plant seed potatoes in raised beds, or containers. It is important to cover the potatoes well with soil and water.

6. Right environment

Potatoes thrive in cool climates with moderate moisture, so water regularly to keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged. Mulch, or leaves, can be used to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

7. Keep adding fertilizer

Keep adding fertilizer to the plants from time to time so that growth continues. Once the plant flowers, stop adding fertilizer.

8. Make a Pile of Soil

Make a mound of soil around the potato plants. This artificial pile elevates the potatoes, and protects the roots from cold weather.

9. Waiting for ripening

It takes about two to three months for potatoes to ripen. As the plants grow, the leaves will begin to yellow and wither. This is a sign that the potatoes are ready for harvest.

10. Harvest the crop

The potato crop is usually ready in about 100 to 130 days. So when the plants turn completely brown, and the leaves wither, or dry out, the potatoes are ready to be pulled out of the soil. After bending the plant, let the tuber sit in the ground for two to three weeks. This resting period is necessary for the potato skin to harden.

11. Store potatoes

Once the potatoes have dried, you can store them in a nice cool, dark place. Avoid keeping them in plastic bags or containers, as this can cause them to rot.

Grow bags can be used on the rooftop of the house to grow potatoes. Big clay pots are also available in the market, or it would be better to use an old bucket or container at home.
